Research Description
Integrated Corridor Management was originally thought of as a short primary freeway corridor of 15 to 20 miles in length with arterials adjacent to the corridor of a few miles, along with transit operating in the area. In more recent years, some regions have developed ICM type programs that cover large areas with multiple "primary" corridors, and focusing on multiple modes and using more advanced technologies (i.e. machine learning, connected vehicles) and trying to influence traveler behaviors (i.e. incentivization).
Additional Supporting Information
By expanding to multiple corridors, and a regional approach there are new opportunities and challenges that agencies face in the planning, design, development, and operations of these regional multi-modal management programs. This research would identify some of the challenges and lessons learned to include: • Technology Integration: o Data formats for distributing machine learning based prediction and decision support o Minimum data requirements for ICM strategies – types and quality of various data o Using Connected Vehicle data for ICM – what is needed, which use cases • Institutional integration: o Organizational structures to include coalitions, cooperative operations, and shared operations (i.e. off-hour operation of arterial system by another agency) • Operational Integration: o Impact of machine learning – how does prediction impact operational decisions o Impact of traveler behavior modification – how does dynamic pricing, incentivization impact demand
