Research Description
Microsoft has defined Cloud Computing as “the delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.”
Software as a service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which a third-party provider hosts applications and makes them available to customers over the Internet. SaaS is one of three main categories of cloud computing, alongside infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS).
Many State and Local operating agencies have begun to replace legacy advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) in recent years, and some have considered allowing cloud hosting of various pieces of their ATMS. With these services available to State and Local traffic management agencies, this research will determine how cloud and edge computing has and could impact the ATMS for security, cost, flexibility, and other factors. Additionally, the research will examine where it is currently used, types of uses and how the architecture of traffic management systems could be modified to support these services.
Additional Supporting Information
The research will include a State of the Practice, Data Collection on potential uses and services, and a practitioners guide to using Cloud Computing and Software as a Service within the ATMS.
