Research Description

Highway agencies now have access to a vast array of data sources, with vehicle telematics as a potentially powerful new data source, whether directly from an OEM, or through third-party providers. There is an urgent need to evaluate the relevance, necessity, quality, availability, integration, and cost-effectiveness of this data with more traditional data to support current and emerging use cases such as: • Real-time traffic management and event detection • Traffic systems management evaluation and planning • Simulation and related studies to support planning • Before and after studies for infrastructure or other roadway enhancements • Safety analyses to complement traditional crash data-based assessments

This research will result in a better understanding of: • Costs and benefits of telematics data for use in TSMO and broader agency decision making • The levels of market penetration required to support specific use cases. • Data sets available (OEM vs 3rd party), data format and schema, and latency of the various data sets. • This study can offer readiness guidance (workforce, IT, cost, and other considerations) for integrating telematics data with existing data to support better decision making.

Additional Supporting Information

New and emerging data sources can complement existing data sources from public agencies to provide a robust data platform to improve TSMO
